Welcome to the second edition of the MAGNO newsletter!
In this issue, we highlight key developments and exciting progress as we work towards revolutionizing sustainable food packaging. Join us as we share our achievements and upcoming steps in creating a greener, healthier future.
MAIN HIGHLIGHTS
MAGNO wraps up its first year in Porto
The MAGNO project has successfully concluded its first year, laying the groundwork for transforming Europe’s food packaging value chain. During the consortium meeting hosted by Holoss in Porto, key achievements included publishing five reviews on critical topics and uniting stakeholders to map materials, business models, and food packaging practices. This foundational work paves the way for creating an Ecosystem Digital Twin, a tool designed to shift from linear to circular production systems.
What’s Next: The Technical Sprint
MAGNO now enters its second phase, focusing on:
- Packaging manufacturing practices
- Packaging use in the food system
- Sustainability and end of life options
- Consumer acceptance and Innovative circular business model
MAGNO PROJECT FEATURES
Cutting-Edge Computational Technologies in the MAGNO Project – IDENER Tests
MAGNO is leveraging advanced computational technologies through its partner IDENER to address the pressing challenge of reducing plastic packaging pollution in the EU food systems. The project employs innovative methods to collect and analyze vast datasets, forming the foundation of a Digital Twin designed to optimize packaging sustainability.
Key methodologies include:
- Large Language Models (LLMs)
- Embeddings
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

DELIVERABLES
Draft Deliverable of MAGNO D1.3 – HOLOSS
This document sets relevant KPIs to assess circular approaches and new business strategies proposed by MAGNO for food packaging. The KPIs definition will allow decisions to be made and strategies to be created based on the proposed objectives.
Different impact and indicators will support the results that must be achieved during the progress of the study of the food packaging value chain. The selected KPIs will cover specific stages in the value chain, including raw material use, waste generation, recycling, production, and costs. Based on these indicators, it will be possible to measure and evaluate the performance and results achieved throughout the life of the project.
The development of our KPI framework is a collaborative effort involving all MAGNO partners. Together, we have refined these indicators to guarantee their clarity and alignment with the project’s goals.
Draft Deliverable of MAGNO D6.2
In this document you can find a comprehensive initial analysis of MAGNO’s market and operating strategy, which will help to define a final joint and individual operating plan.
A joint effort represented in this document and led by KVC, with contributions from each and every one of the project partners. This works as an initial framework for a comprehensive plan to effectively manage all exploitation activities and as a guideline for all partners to refer to when necessary.
It includes, among many other things shown in the document:
- Key Exploitable Results (KER) definition process.
- Market analysis, followed by CANVA for MAGNO results, to establish the initial market picture and the MAGNO plan.
Draft Deliverable of MAGNO D7.1
To ensure our strategies are effective, MAGNO has developed a comprehensive framework of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that provide a systematic, measurable method to monitor the project’s progress and achievements. All comprehended into a deliverable that details the work carried out under Task 1.4 “KPI validation and definition”. The development of our KPI framework is a collaborative effort involving all MAGNO partners. Together, we have refined these indicators to guarantee their clarity and alignment with the project’s goals. The plan included in the document aims to ensure the good management of the overall communication, participation and dissemination activities of the MAGNO project.
