MEDLIFE 2026: MAGNO Researcher Mohamed Banni to Deliver Keynote on Microplastics and Human Health
December 7 – December 10
From 7 to 10 December 2026, the MEDLIFE 2026 Conference will take place in Naples, Italy, featuring a keynote presentation by Mohamed Banni, from the Laboratory of Agrobiodiversity and Ecotoxicology at the University of Sousse and involved in the MAGNO project.
His keynote, entitled “From Packaging to Pathophysiology: First Evidence Linking Microplastic Exposure to Obesity and Enhanced Cancer Aggressivity”, will explore the potential implications of micro- and nanoplastic exposure for human health, with particular attention to food packaging as a possible source of dietary exposure.
The presentation will introduce recent experimental findings on how micro- and nanoplastics affect mesenchymal stem cells and liver cancer cells, including changes in cellular viability, regenerative potential and processes associated with tumour progression.
The keynote will also highlight the importance of the One Health approach, which recognises the interconnected nature of human, animal and environmental health, and the need to better understand the potential health risks associated with microplastic exposure.
These topics are closely connected to MAGNO’s work towards safer and more sustainable food packaging solutions.
