SUMMARY:Workshop on Social Life Cycle Assessment within the SSbD Framework
DESCRIPTION:16 June 2025 | Brussels | Hybrid format \nKveloce\, one of the MAGNO project partners\, is organising a Participatory Workshop on Social LCA within the Safe and Sustainable by Design Framework\, to be held on June 16th from 12:00 to 16:30 CET in a hybrid format. \n📍 Venue: Topos EU Parliament\, Rue d’Arlon 25\, 1050 Brussels🌐 Online access: Details will be shared after registration🗓️ Registration deadline: 6 June 2025 \nThe workshop will focus on exchanging knowledge\, evidence-based methods and case studies to help build consensus around Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA)\, with the aim of paving the way for future developments in the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework. \n\nWhat is SSbD?\nThe SSbD framework (Caldeira et al.\, 2022) was developed by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. It is a holistic approach that ensures chemicals\, materials\, products and processes are safe for people and the environment\, and sustainable throughout their life cycle. This involves integrating safety and sustainability (environmental\, social\, and economic) considerations into the design\, production\, use\, and end-of-life stages. \nWithin this framework\, sustainability is assessed using the Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) method\, where Social LCA is one of the three pillars. However\, S-LCA is a relatively new area of research and presents several challenges compared to environmental LCA\, such as difficulties in justifying impact pathways and lack of consistent reference scales. \n\nA Participatory Approach\nThis workshop is proposed in the context of several EU-funded projects joining forces to exchange knowledge and contribute to a joint understanding of S-LCA. It is supported by the IRISS network\, with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) expressing interest in the results and feedback gathered from the session. \nThe agenda will include the introduction of attending stakeholders and researchers\, followed by a participatory session where attendees will present their own experiences\, methodologies\, limitations\, and discuss opportunities and next steps for advancing S-LCA within the SSbD framework. \n\n🔗 To register\, click here.
